The Miles Grant - History
Samuel Miles received a grant of land from the King of Spain on July 18, 1813, encompassing an area approximately nine miles long and three miles wide. In 1823 and 1824 Miles deeded a third divided interest to each of three persons, including John Hanson, hence the use of the name Hanson's Landing. The complex we know today, Phases I through V, Country Club Apartments, Country Club Cove, River Pines and Hanson's Landing was initiated in 1971 when Westinghouse purchased about 200 acres from the Salerno Development Co. Phase I was completed in 1973 and Phase II in 1974. Phases III, IV and V were farmed out to independent developers and were completed in 1980. Our Clubhouse was completed in 1975 and incorporated as a not-for-profit organization by the State of Florida on March 19, 1975. Operation of the Club continued by the developer until December 15, 1977 when Westinghouse conveyed the Club and its facilities to about 270 unit owners. A Transition Committee of members was appointed July 1, 1978 to assume management of financing operations, with no money in the Treasury and no reserves.
Dedicated members volunteered not only in financing needed capital expenditures for the Club, but also in working for the Club on a no-pay basis. Bazaars and various functions were held to help provide operating funds. Classes were held in exercise, arts, crafts, woodworking, etc. for the members' benefit. Much is owed to the efforts of our early members in this overall venture of self-help. A debt of gratitude is acknowledged to the members of the Transition Committee and later the Operating Committee. Our Board of Directors was required to permit Westinghouse representation on our Board until July 1, 1986 when we became totally self-governing. |
